One of the most common questions we receive from cyclists planning their Italian holiday is: "What are the routes actually like? Are they safe? Will there be a lot of traffic?" These are entirely reasonable concerns — and we're happy to answer them in full.
Safety Is Our Top Priority
Safety is the paramount concern behind every itinerary we design. Each trip is planned not only to be a fun and memorable experience, but to ensure that every participant rides in safe, controlled conditions throughout. We do not add routes to our programmes unless our team has personally ridden and verified them.
How We Plan Each Itinerary
Each itinerary is planned to adapt to the specific territory, considering the best route options available in that area. Our approach follows a clear hierarchy:
- Cycling paths and dedicated infrastructure are always prioritised where they exist. Italy has an expanding network of cycling routes and greenways — we use them wherever possible.
- Quiet secondary roads through villages and countryside form the backbone of most of our routes. These roads carry minimal traffic, offer beautiful scenery and connect the cultural highlights we love to share.
- Main roads are avoided in our standard cycling tourism programmes. We plan routes specifically to keep you away from busy highways and major arterial roads.
What About Sports-Oriented Tours?
For more sport-focused programmes — such as our Racing Tour — participants are experienced cyclists who are comfortable riding on roads with more traffic. Even in these cases, we maintain a preference for smaller roads wherever possible. When larger roads become necessary due to limited alternatives in the area, careful planning ensures participant safety throughout.
The combination of quieter secondary roads and dedicated cycling infrastructure enables deeper cultural engagement while maintaining safety as the primary focus — delivering an enriching experience on every tour.
On-Road Conditions
Road surfaces in Emilia-Romagna and the Adriatic coast area are generally well-maintained. The rolling hills and flat coastal plains offer a variety of terrain suited to different fitness levels. Elevation profiles for each tour are provided in advance so you know exactly what to expect before you arrive.
All routes are provided as GPX files compatible with most cycling computers and smartphones, so you always know where you are and where you're going — even on self-guided tours.
